The Acai Berry
The Amazing Acai Berry
It is amazing that this fruit has just recently made its way into the national public consciousness. Aside from all the hype that has been promoted about the health benefits of this fruit, if you consider just three of the basic ingredients of this fruit – antioxidants, unsaturated fatty acids and dietary fiber – you have to come to the conclusion it can only be good for you. But is it really any better than any other sources of these ingredients? First you have to be aware of the three parts of this fruit. The skin, the fruity pulp and the seed. All three of these contain varying amounts of the beneficial ingredients.
We have all watched the many infomercials about the health benefits of "juicers". When juicing, it is recommended that you put the entire fruit or vegetable, skin and seeds, into the juicer in order to extract the highest amount of minerals, vitamins and fiber. All the parts of a fruit contain ingredients beneficial to our health. The same is the case for the acai berry. The skin, fruity pulp and the seeds all contain ingredients beneficial to our health. The best acai product will contain extracts from all portions of the acai berry.
The skin and fruity pulp are the main source of antioxidants and dietary fiber while the seeds are a source of unsaturated fatty acids. Antioxidants have been proven time and time again as effective in fighting the damaging effects of oxygen free radicals within our bodies. This is not a matter of dispute, it is a fact. And dietary fiber, who by now even doubts the health benefits of a regular intake of dietary fiber.
And polyunsaturated fatty acids. What is so important about them and why do we need them and how do they benefit us? Essential fatty acids are those fatty acids that cannot be made within our bodies from other ingredients. We have to get them from a dietary source. Other needed fatty acids can be made inside our bodies from other components but not essential fatty acids. That is why they are called "essential", we have to get them from a food source. Essential fatty acids play a part in many metabolic processes affecting our health on a cellular level and there is evidence to suggest that low levels of essential fatty acids, or the wrong balance of types among the essential fatty acids, may be a factor in a number of illnesses.
The acai berry contains its own unique blend of all of these ingredients – antioxidants, dietary fiber and polyunsaturated fatty acids, not to mention some of the common minerals and vitamins found in all fruits. All fruits are different and all fruits have their health benefits. Now isn’t it time you experienced the health benefits of this unique and powerful fruit?
